Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I sign up to play in a tournament?

You can sign up for a tournament in one of two ways:

Either complete a paper entry form and mail it, along with a check payable to NJTTC, to the address provided on the form or drop it off in the office, if you're at the club,

or pre-register on-line on our web site.

Links to both the online registration form and a printable form can be found on our tournament registration page.

2. This will be my first USATT tournament, what events should I sign up for? What is the Round Robin format?

The USATT events are classified according to USATT rating points. The higher a player's point rating, the better the player. Beginners are recommended to try U850, U1000, U1200, etc.; the Open is for the most advanced players.

For example, event #1 Under 850 means that the highest point rating a player playing in this event can have is 849; in other words, it is the most beginner level event we run. The next rating event, Under 1000, caps the highest rating at 999, so you will find some players who are a little better. You can play in as many events as you would like as long as you qualify for the event. For example, if you are rated 750, you can play in the Under 850, Under 1000, Under 1200, etc.

Format: Round Robin format means that you are placed into a group of players and each plays against the others. The winner (or possibly winner and runner-up) of the group will advance to a single elimination draw to determine the final winner in that event. Example: let's say that you and 15 other people enter the Under 850 event. The 16 people will be divided into 4 groups of 4. You will play against the 3 other players in your group no matter what, even if you lose all 3 matches.

If you are an unrated player, you would not be allowed to advance beyond your Round Robin group into the single elimination draw, even if you win all of your Round Robin matches. This is because the event is a rate-limited event (Under 850, for example), and it is possible that an unrated player playing in a rate-limited event is actually "too good" for the event. The good news is that after playing in a sanctioned tournament like this one, a rating will be calculated for you, and in the future you would then be allowed to play in the appropriate rate-limited events and not have this restriction on you.

3. Do you provide equipment?

All players are expected to bring their own paddles. As this is a USATT-sanctioned, all equipment must be USATT-approved. We do, however, have a small supply of loaner rackets for guests of the Club to use. We also sell equipment.

4. What other fees are there, besides the entry fee for each event?

In order for you to play in a USATT-sanctioned tournament like this one, you must join USATT or, assuming you have never been a member of USATT before, buy a One-Time Tournament Pass. A One-Time Tournament Pass is $10; USATT membership is $40/year, or $105/3 years for adults. Note that the One-Time Tournament Pass only allows you to play in a tournament only once. If you intent to play any more tournaments in the future, you will have to be a USATT member by obtaining USATT membership as indicated above.

For example, if you are new to table tennis and only wish to play once as a trial, and you choose to enter events 1 and 3, the Under 850 and the Under 1000. Your total fees will be:

Under 850 $14
Under 1000 $14
USATT Processing Fees $7
Registration Fee $3
One-Time Tournament Pass $10
TOTAL $48

Anyone is welcomed to stop by at the club to watch any events, free of charge.

5. If my USATT rating changes between now and the tournament, which rating will be used?

The rating reported on the USATT ratings webpage as of the Friday before the tournament will be used. If your rating happens to move above the cutoff for an event you've entered, you will be removed from that event and promoted to the next highest event from the ones you've entered. You may also resubmit the online registration form with a comment that you wish to change your events due to a rating change.

6. How soon do I expect the new rating be updated in USATT web site?

We submit the match results to USATT within a week; USATT then handles the processing of the matches and the updating of the rankings. USATT posts new ratings to its web site each Thursday night.

7. I already registered for the events but can't play. What is your refund policy?

Here is our refund policy (this is also in the back of our entry form):

REFUND POLICY: Players may receive a full refund for any events if withdrawn by the entry deadline. Refunds will not be given for any withdrawal after that date, except for the case when a player's rating is too high for a desired event and the player chooses not to be promoted to the next highest event. All entries - including on-line entries - are responsible for full entry fees if not withdrawn by the entry deadline.

Example: If you entered the U1000 event but your rating turns out to be 1100. You have the option to play in the U1200 event instead, or just choose to get your money back for the U1000 event.

8. When do I pay?

You can mail your check along with your entry form or pay at the tournament. If pre-register on-line, you would pay at the tournament. In the future, on-line payment will be made available.

9. What kind of scoring format do you use? How many sets do you need to win to win a match? How many points do you need to win a set? Do you use a standard 11 point set or 21 point set?

All round robin matches will be best 3 out of 5 games, 11 points/game. Open event matches starting from the quarter finals and Single Elimination (SE) events are best 4 out of 7 games, 11 points/game. Other events in the final stages are best 4 out of 7 games if time permits. The Tournament

Committee reserves the right to modify the format at any time.

10. I am under 18 years old - will this affect my eligibility for any tournaments?

Generally no - except for age-limited Events such as Junior Under 14 and few other events typically offered in the NJ State Championships. There are no age restrictions unless explicitly stated.

11. I am not NJTTC member, so I would have to include a temporary registration fee as well as the tournament entry fee, correct?

Regardless of being NJTTC member or not, every tournament participant has to pay the $3.00 Registration Fee plus the $7.00 USATT Processing Fee plus the fee for each event entered.

12. Do you have changing area and locker room, what other facilities are available?

We do not have a changing area but you can use the bathroom for that. We do not have a locker room but there are reserved lockers for tournament use. The entire bottom row of lockers near the men's room is reserved for "Daily Use Only" and can be used by tournament participants. If you would like to use one of these lockers to secure your belongings while at the tournament, please bring your own lock and take any open "Daily Use Only" locker. Please be sure to remove your lock and take your belongings at the end of the day though since Daily Use Only locks and locker contents left overnight are subject to removal.

13. If I cancel my registration, how do I get refund?

Once your cancellation is accepted, we can mail you back the check, or shred it.

14. How long is each event?

It's difficult to predict due to many factors that influence whether the match will be on time or not; generally speaking 2-3 hours after the start time of the event.
